Southern Energy Training Consortium
In 2009, Bioworks created a consortium of training providers and employers to win a $2.9M grant, one of 26 Green Jobs Training Programs awarded by the U.S. Department of Labor in early 2010. Training was provided to 480 individuals in energy efficiency and renewable energy occupations.
All grant training and placement goals were exceeded, along with the full implementation of 10 training programs. Outcomes include:
- Enrollments: 480 (122% of goal)
- Training Completions: 405 (129% of goal)
- Certificates/Degrees Earned: 269 (151% of goal)
- Job Placements: 258 (105% of goal, through July 15, 2012)
In addition, approximately half of the individuals served (46.1%) were unemployed at the beginning of training, with 60% of those individuals identified as dislocated workers. The majority of all individuals served (51%) throughout the 26-county region were ethnic minorities. The new and renewed opportunities for these individuals will last a lifetime, and the capacity developed at the training institutions will continue to serve future students.
First Choice IT Group – On- the- Job (OJT) employers
“I would like to thank Memphis Bioworks personally. Several years ago I started an IT Consulting business named First Choice IT Group. It was really scary starting your own business and making sure you have enough cash flow. As my business grew, I wanted to hire full-time employees but was too afraid of the full-time salary commitment. Then I met Ann Terry of Memphis Bioworks who talked to me about the On the Job Training Program. This program allowed me to hire my first three full-time employees and two more full-time employees after that. Without this program, things may have been different with my business or may have taken longer to grow. Since starting with the program, my business has grown 50% every year for the last four years. We continue to go back to Memphis Bioworks to recruite new talent.”
