Memphis Bioworks™ Foundation Selling Souvenir Bricks as a Memento of former Baptist Memorial Hospital
MEMPHIS, Tennessee, August 11, 2006 - The Memphis Bioworks Foundation is selling a limited amount of bricks from the former Baptist Memorial Hospital.
In 2001, Baptist Memorial Health Care donated its property in the Memphis Medical Center to the Foundation for the site of the UT-Baptist Research Park, which serves as the focal point of the city’s biomedical economic development.
The implosion of the Baptist Memorial Hospital on November 6, 2005, closed the door on an era in Memphis history and signified the beginning of Memphis’ future as an internationally recognized center for the development and commercialization of biomedical technologies. When the UT-Baptist Park is completed, the development will provide $250 million in annual salaries, 5,000 new jobs, and will have an annual economic impact of $2 billion.
These bricks provide a tangible reminder of the hospital, which at one time was the largest private hospital in the world and had 2,000 beds. People from throughout the Mid-South were cared for at the hospital, including Elvis Presley, Archie Manning and other celebrities. The hospital also was home to many medical and industry firsts.
The cost per brick is $25 if picked up from the Foundation and $40 if shipped. Each brick comes with a letter of authenticity from the Memphis Bioworks Foundation. For additional information about the bricks or to place an order contact the Memphis Bioworks Foundation at (901) 448-8897 or email jthompson@memphisbioworks.org.
The Memphis Bioworks Foundation, a not-for-profit organization, was formed in early 2001 to establish the Memphis region as an internationally recognized center for biomedical technology through education, research, job training, and commercialization.
