Memphis-based Orthopedic Start-up, ExtraOrtho, Donates $579,000 in Product to Haiti Relief

News Release
Feb 22, 2010

MEMPHIS, Tennessee, February 16, 2010 ExtraOrtho, Inc. announced the donation of $579,000 in medical devices to help meet urgent medical needs in Haiti. ExtraOrthoTM is a privately held, early stage orthopaedic company that recently started selling a bone fixation device in the United States.
In response to numerous adult and pediatric crush injuries, ExtraOtho partnered with surgical teams from three internationally recognized medical organizations with medical missions to Haiti. For each team, ExtraOtho supplied its XtraFixTM External Fixation System that is used to treat broken bones such as the tibia and femur. The use of the fixation system can often save the limb but does not require invasive surgery.
The first surgical mission was from Le Bonheur Childrens Medical Center in Memphis. That team just returned from a two-week mission. ExtraOrtho donated $160,000 in product to the team. Details on that teams work in Haiti can be found at a blog kept by the team at http://www.lebonheur.org/blogs/lebonheurresponds.
The second medical surgical mission was from R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. The Shock Trauma group arrived in Haiti two weeks ago for an extended mission with $352,000 of XtraFix external bone fixation devices.
A third medical surgical mission from Duke University in Raleigh, North Carolina was provided $67,000 in special fixation pins they specifically requested from ExtraOrtho for their upcoming trip.
Even though we are just a start-up organization, when we saw the images of people suffering in Haiti we knew that somehow ExtraOrtho should play its part in helping, said Brian Austin, ExtraOrthos chief executive officer and former senior executive with Memphis-based Smith & Nephew. By putting our fixation device in the hands of skilled doctors traveling to Haiti, we knew we would be able to help people in desperate need. We are grateful to Le Bonheur, R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center, and Duke University for including us in their work.
ExtraOrtho received clearance from the FDA in July 2009 and began selling product this past December. The company currently has seven employees. For more information, visit www.extraortho.com.
