Within a few miles of each other, mostly just north and east of Downtown Memphis, sits a staggering array of medical treatment, education and research facilities, from world-renowned St. Jude Children's Research Hospital to the highly specialized Medical Education and Research Institute (MERI). Known as the Memphis Central Biomedical District, this concentrated area of biomedical assets is being redeveloped and expanded. The Foundation is the financial manager for the ten-year, $500 million project.
The Foundation has identified and advocates a number of ways to make the Memphis Central Biomedical District even more functional:
- Improving transportation, both pedestrian and vehicular
- Incorporating greenspace through parks and streetscapes
- Land banking
- Upgrading security
Improvements, such as a new trolley line, are being made as funds come in. The quicker these happen, the better the prospects for increased investment by biotech companies.
